RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
