In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an bold commencement to his term.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The 34-year-old political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
